REIC Makes Submission to Standing Committee Regarding Bill 106

Oct 23, 2015

Bill 106 (an Act to amend the Condominium Act and other condo-related legislation) passed second reading on October 7, 2015. It was then referred to the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs.

The Standing Committee held public hearings in Toronto to consider Bill 106. REIC members were represented at the public hearings regarding Bill 106, Protecting Condominium Owners Act.

REIC Liaison Committee Chair, and National Board Director Johnmark Roberts, FRI, presented an overview of REIC's written submission to the Standing Committee on October 22 at Queens Park in Toronto with REIC faculty and senior volunteer, Scott Fischer, CRP.

The submission shows REIC's support of the efforts of the provincial government to ensure Bill 106 protects affordable ownership, protects the public and reflects the current and future needs of the diverse group of condominium owners, residents and other stakeholders in Ontario.

The submission also raises a number of concerns including burdening homeowners with additional fees and levies, consumer protection, and ensuring that managers entrusted with the day-to-day running of multi-million-dollar condo corporations across the province are adequately trained and vetted to reduce the risk of mismanagement.
