Chapter History

In the Beginning……

A Brief History of the Toronto Chapter – REIC

Initially, there were no chapters as there was no REIC. In 1943, the Canadian Association of Real Estate Boards - CAREB was formed as a unifying lobbying organization to withstand the controls legislated by the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. CAREB formed the Canadian Institute of Realtors - CIR in 1955 to provide organized advanced education to its members. There were originally only 96 members who completed a correspondence course through the University of Toronto.

Eventually other provincial Real Estate Boards joined and chapters were formed. The Toronto Chapter became an entity in 1962. CAREB changed its name to CREA – Canadian Real Estate Association in 1971; and as part of it, CIR changed its name to the Real Estate Institute of Canada - REIC. Canadian members of the American-based Institute of Real Estate Management - IREM joined with REIC that year. In 1975, CREA and REIC separated with REIC becoming autonomous and a franchising agreement was finalized with IREM. In 1979, the Institute of Leasehold Acquisition – ILA became a third division of REIC.

The Toronto Chapter is the oldest and largest chapter in REIC. It has won the most awards and is currently Chapter of the Year; as well as produced more National REIC leaders than any other chapter. Its hosting of the two most successful National Annual Business Conferences/AGMs provided more money, sponsors and attendees than any other in REIC’s history. Its newsletter, the acclaimed In Touch, has been in circulation for twenty years and each past issue captures and reflects both the history and the striving spirit of the Chapter for all to witness.
