Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC)
The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) was established in December 2002 to promote and accelerate the design and construction of high performance buildings. The Council holds the license for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in Canada. LEED is a tool to facilitate market transformation. The Council works closely with and supports leaders and decision makers in industry and government who influence how our cities are developed. The Council:
- Promotes the design and construction of buildings that are environmentally responsible profitable and healthy places to live and work.
- Develops and promotes industry standards, educational programs, and design practices related to environmentally responsible building.
- Conducts research and delivers sector-specific education programs.
Members join CaGBC for professional development, LEED certification, and current information on better practices for high-performance building design, construction and operation. The benefits are valued as competitive advantages in the growing momentum towards more sustainable buildings.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®)
Through its membership, the CaGBC identifies industry-based opportunities to affect market transformation by promoting better practices through professional training and awareness. The Council’s main activity is to facilitate the uptake of the LEED® rating system in the commercial, institutional and high-rise residential sector. This is achieved through the LEED certification of construction projects and the LEED accreditation of professionals. LEED certified buildings meet the highest environmental performance standards in Canada. The point-based system covers six areas: site development, water and energy efficiency, material selection, indoor air quality and innovation of design. There are now 44 LEED certified projects in Canada with more than 260 registered under the LEED system—and this number is growing rapidly.
LEED systems for application to commercial interiors, low-rise residential projects and sustainable communities are under development. The CaGBC is also working in collaboration with a number of local decision-makers to design tools for municipal policy-making and programs for green building implementation.
