MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Your National Board has recently returned home after spending two grueling days working on the REIC Strategic Plan.

Strategic planning is very important to any organization and especially so for REIC. We need many more members and we want to retain those members we already have. How to do this?

Strategic planning requires a strong commitment from all of us. We, as Board members, must lead, support, follow-up and live the results of this strategic planning process.     Read More...

FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

A Change Will Do You Good

It’s hard to believe that 5 months has passed since the 2007 AGM in Ottawa. Where exactly did the summer go? Then again it hasn’t exactly left us yet, around here the summer temperatures continue to remain even though we are well into the month of October.

They say change, although it can be a scary thing - is a good thing. It is defined as “to transform or convert”. In the past several months our organization itself has been experiencing many of its own transformations and conversions.

A New Direction – Strategic planning session charts REIC on a New Course

As the old saying goes “it took a lot of blood sweat and tears.” Alright there was no blood and the only tears shed would be those of joy. Yet thanks to the Strategic Planning sessions held in September REIC is set to embark in a new direction.

The two-day event which took place in Toronto on September 13-14 brought together the REIC Board of Directors, Executive Director Maura McLaren, and members of the REIC management staff to help lay the foundation for the future of REIC.      More....

CONDOMINIUM INSURANCE – Prudent

Seniors Dictate

Insurance companies started the slogan, “Freedom 55”, but few people will ever achieve it. Legislative changes prohibiting mandatory retirement at age 65 have allowed us to recalibrate and now aim for “Freedom 75”. More and more people, even though they are financially set, are choosing to work way beyond age 65. I know some who are working well into their 80’s and who still climb the stairs two at a time.

With this changing trend, the market is cleverly responding with all sorts of products and services to take the enormous amount of loose change from the seniors’ pockets. For those without a lot of spare cash and who painstakingly worked to pay off their mortgages, there’s now the “reverse mortgage” with the jingle, “Wouldn’t it be nice”!
